Having recently turned vegan, I wanted a way to control slugs and snails without killing them or using other animal ingredients. I’ve used sheep’s wool pellets in the past, and will use up what I’ve got left but I won’t buy any more. Continue reading “Natural Garlic Snail and Slug Repellent”
How to Make Your Own Compost at Home
You might think that home composting in a small garden wouldn’t be possible. I’ve composted as long as we have had this garden and managed to get enough to mulch my plants in the early spring each year. Continue reading “How to Make Your Own Compost at Home”
The 5 Best Plants for Self Seeding
Over the last year, I wanted to take a more naturalistic approach to the garden. I love the look of a border packed with colour and hate the look of bare soil! So I decided to let some plants run to seed and see where they ended up. I think I’ve now found the best plants for self seeding in my garden. Continue reading “The 5 Best Plants for Self Seeding”
Bottlebrush – Plant of the Week (31st May)
The bottlebrush is really coming into its stride now. Although I have a feeling that there is plenty left to come, and it might not even be at its peak yet. However, when this plant gets going, it really grabs your attention! Continue reading “Bottlebrush – Plant of the Week (31st May)”
Shade Loving Plants
A lot of gardeners consider shade to be a problem, but I’ve found the shady area of my garden to be the most beautiful at certain parts of the year. There are plenty of shade loving plants to keep your whole garden colourful. Continue reading “Shade Loving Plants”
Allium – Plant of the Week (24th May)
This week has been a hot one! I’ve had to keep on top of watering, especially the containers. Some days I’ve watered twice a day! Despite this, the alliums are looking gorgeous. I have mostly “Allium Purple Sensation” in the borders with the odd “Allium Christophii” and “Allium Sphaerocephalon” thrown in as well. Continue reading “Allium – Plant of the Week (24th May)”
Growing Herbs in a Sink Container
I’ve been working on a project this year to grow some herbs in an old Belfast sink that my Brother gave me. Everything has been grown from seed and I’ve had so many more plants grow than expected! Continue reading “Growing Herbs in a Sink Container”
Geum – Plant of the Week (17th May)
This week has been a mixed bag weather wise. We’ve managed to escape the frosts down where we are; right on the South East tip of the country. But we have had high winds and some of my plants have taken a bit of a battering. Despite this the 2 geums in the garden are looking beautiful. Continue reading “Geum – Plant of the Week (17th May)”
Container Gardening: Beginning the Trough
Today marked the day that I started to get things growing in the trough. Last year, my brother gave me a big sack of leaves and I thought I’d see if they mulched down into leaf mould. I probably could have left them a little longer and kept them a bit wetter, but they’re mixed in and I hope they improve the soil. Continue reading “Container Gardening: Beginning the Trough”
My Garden Containers Set Up
I consider myself extremely fortunate to live in a house with a garden, albeit on the smaller side. Especially in the current times of self isolation and social distancing. It gives me somewhere to sit and enjoy the sunshine, somewhere to socialise when we’re allowed visitors again and somewhere to grow my own food. Continue reading “My Garden Containers Set Up”
