July and August is when the verbena bonariensis comes into its own. It’s full of bees and butterflies at this time of year, filling their boots with its nectar. It’s a lovely plant to add movement and height to a garden. It gently bobs in the breeze, and can grow to about 2 metres if it likes its position. Continue reading “Verbena Bonariensis – Plant of the Week (2nd August)”
Petunia – Plant of the Week (26th July)
Some might say that a petunia is old fashioned or gaudy, but I love them. They provide such a vibrant burst of colour and can be grown quite simply from seed. Continue reading “Petunia – Plant of the Week (26th July)”
Nicotiana – Plant of the Week (19th July)
I’ve grown nicotiana from seed very successfully from seed for the last few years. When I say very successfully, I mean that from one small sowing of seeds, I managed to get 45 seedlings! Continue reading “Nicotiana – Plant of the Week (19th July)”
Achillea – Plant of the Week (12th July)
Achillea are a long flowering plant that provide a pop of colour. They are a perennial so they die down each year and come up again the following season. They are especially good for pollinators with small mouth parts as their nectar is easy to access. Continue reading “Achillea – Plant of the Week (12th July)”
Honeysuckle – Plant of the Week (28th June)
Honeysuckle is a plant that I grow for its scent rather than it’s looks. However, as a climber it is useful to cover a fence or wall with pretty flowers, and foliage that lasts throughout the seasons. Traditionally used in cottage gardens, they evoke a romantic feel in a garden. Continue reading “Honeysuckle – Plant of the Week (28th June)”
Geranium – Plant of the Week (14th June)
This post is all about true Geraniums, not the Pelargoniums that we often call by the same name. If you have a hardy geranium in your garden, you’ve probably noticed it beginning to flower round about this time of year. Continue reading “Geranium – Plant of the Week (14th June)”
Fuchsia – Plant of the Week (7th June)
The fuchsia looks stunning at this time of year. It’s covered in flowers that look like tiny ballerinas dancing in the breeze. I love the bright colour that it brings to our gravel garden at the front of the house. Continue reading “Fuchsia – Plant of the Week (7th June)”
Bottlebrush – Plant of the Week (31st May)
The bottlebrush is really coming into its stride now. Although I have a feeling that there is plenty left to come, and it might not even be at its peak yet. However, when this plant gets going, it really grabs your attention! Continue reading “Bottlebrush – Plant of the Week (31st May)”
Allium – Plant of the Week (24th May)
This week has been a hot one! I’ve had to keep on top of watering, especially the containers. Some days I’ve watered twice a day! Despite this, the alliums are looking gorgeous. I have mostly “Allium Purple Sensation” in the borders with the odd “Allium Christophii” and “Allium Sphaerocephalon” thrown in as well. Continue reading “Allium – Plant of the Week (24th May)”
Geum – Plant of the Week (17th May)
This week has been a mixed bag weather wise. We’ve managed to escape the frosts down where we are; right on the South East tip of the country. But we have had high winds and some of my plants have taken a bit of a battering. Despite this the 2 geums in the garden are looking beautiful. Continue reading “Geum – Plant of the Week (17th May)”
